What Is Brainspotting? A Pathway to Deeper Healing
By Sharon Kim, LCPC, EMDR
For many people, talk therapy alone isn’t enough to heal deep-rooted emotional wounds. Sometimes, pain lingers in ways that feel unreachable—beyond words or logic. This is where Brainspotting offers a unique and powerful path forward.
As a therapist trained in trauma-informed care, I use Brainspotting to help clients access the deeper parts of the brain where trauma, stress, and emotional pain are held. It’s a gentle, neurobiological approach that supports healing at the source.
Understanding Brainspotting
Developed by Dr. David Grand, Brainspotting is based on the idea that “where you look affects how you feel.” By identifying specific eye positions (or brainspots) connected to stored emotional experiences, we can activate the brain’s natural ability to process and release unresolved trauma.
These brainspots are like gateways to deeper healing. With the therapist’s guidance, clients hold a gaze while tuning into body sensations, thoughts, and emotions—allowing the nervous system to do the work it was once unable to complete.
What Can Brainspotting Help With?
Brainspotting can be profoundly helpful for:
PTSD and trauma (including early childhood trauma)
Anxiety and panic attacks
Grief and loss
Depression
Chronic pain and medical trauma
Creative or performance blocks
Attachment wounds and relational distress
Whether the source of pain is known or unclear, Brainspotting creates space for healing without needing to retell painful stories. Many clients report feeling lighter, more emotionally regulated, and more connected to themselves after just a few sessions.
What to Expect in a Session
Brainspotting sessions are quiet, grounded, and led by you. As your therapist, I help you find the brainspot linked to a particular issue or emotional experience. You’ll focus your gaze on that point while simply noticing what arises in your body and mind.
You don’t have to talk the entire time. In fact, the process is often more powerful when space is held for your nervous system to gently process without pressure or interruption. Each session is paced according to your comfort and readiness.
Why I Use Brainspotting
As someone deeply committed to trauma healing, I value approaches that go beyond cognitive understanding and into the body’s innate capacity for recovery. Brainspotting allows for profound shifts without retraumatization. It meets each client with compassion, attunement, and trust in their ability to heal.
