Mental Health in the Latino Community – Media Feature
Recently, I had the opportunity to be part of a live segment on Univision Chicago, where we discussed the importance of mental health—particularly within the Latino community and among older adults.
This experience was meaningful on many levels. Not only was it an honor to represent the work we do at Embrace Counseling Center, but it also highlighted something deeply important: mental health conversations are still evolving in our communities, and they matter now more than ever.
Why This Conversation Matters
In many Latino families, emotional struggles are often carried quietly.
There can be unspoken beliefs like:
“You have to be strong”
“We don’t talk about those things”
“Just keep going”
While resilience is a strength, it can sometimes come at the cost of emotional connection, healing, and support.
Mental health is not a sign of weakness—it is a reflection of our humanity.
Breaking Generational Patterns
One of the most powerful parts of this work is recognizing how patterns are passed down:
Silence around emotions
Difficulty expressing vulnerability
Carrying stress in the body
These patterns are not intentional—they are often rooted in survival.
But healing begins when we:
Slow down
Create space to feel
Learn new ways of relating to ourselves and others
The Importance of Representation
Being able to speak about mental health in Spanish, on a platform like Univision, matters.
It creates:
Accessibility
Cultural understanding
A sense of “this is for me too”
When people see someone who understands their language, culture, and experiences, it reduces the barrier to seeking help.
A Somatic Perspective on Healing
At Embrace Counseling Center, we approach healing not just through thoughts, but through the body.
Many of us have learned to disconnect from what we feel.
But our bodies hold important information:
Stress
Fear
Unprocessed emotions
Learning to gently reconnect with these experiences can create a deeper sense of:
Safety
Regulation
Self-trust

A Personal Reflection
Being part of this segment reminded me why this work is so important.
Mental health is not just individual—it’s relational, cultural, and generational.
And healing doesn’t have to happen alone.
You Don’t Have to Do This Alone
If you’ve been holding things in, feeling overwhelmed, or unsure where to start, therapy can be a space to slow down and reconnect with yourself.
At Embrace Counseling Center, we provide a supportive, culturally responsive space where your experiences are honored and your healing can unfold at your own pace.
