Brainspotting Therapy for Trauma, Anxiety & Stress in Illinois

Sometimes you can talk about something, understand it, and know exactly where it came from... and still feel like your reaction to it hasn't really changed.

That's one of the reasons people become interested in Brainspotting.

Brainspotting is a therapy approach that uses where you look, along with what you notice happening internally, to help you work with experiences that can be difficult to reach through conversation alone.

At Embrace Counseling Center, we offer Brainspotting therapy in St. Charles and online throughout Illinois. You don't need to understand how Brainspotting works before you get here. Your therapist will walk you through it.

What Is Brainspotting Therapy?

Brainspotting is based on the idea that where you look can be connected to what you feel and experience.

During a session, your therapist may help you find a particular point in your visual field while you notice thoughts, emotions, memories, or physical sensations that come up. From there, you spend some time staying with what's happening rather than trying to talk your way through every part of it.

And no, you don't have to stare at one spot perfectly or somehow know whether you're doing it right.

Your therapist is there with you throughout the process.

How Brainspotting Therapy Can Help

Brainspotting can give us another way to work when talking isn't quite getting to everything.

Find a place to start

You don't always need a perfectly organized story about what happened. We can start with what you're noticing now- a feeling, memory, physical reaction, or something that keeps coming up.

Pay attention to what happens next

Once a brainspot is identified, your therapist gives you time to notice what comes up without constantly directing the experience.

There can be talking. There can also be stretches where you're simply paying attention.

Move at a pace that works for you

Brainspotting isn't about pushing you into the hardest thing as quickly as possible.

Your therapist will pay attention to how you're doing throughout the session, and you can slow down, pause, talk, or shift gears when you need to.

Brainspotting Doesn’t Require the Perfect Words

This can be especially helpful when you know something is affecting you but explaining it feels difficult.

Sometimes the memory itself is clear. Sometimes what you notice most is a physical reaction, an emotion that seems bigger than the situation, or a familiar feeling you can't quite trace back to anything specific.

You don't have to turn all of that into a neat explanation before bringing it into therapy.

We can start with what you actually have.
