Somatic Therapy & Somatic Experiencing in Illinois

Sometimes you understand exactly why you feel the way you do, and your body still seems to have its own opinion.

Your shoulders tense before you realize you're stressed. Your stomach drops when a certain topic comes up. You know you're safe, but your heart is racing anyway. Or you spend so much time feeling disconnected from your body that noticing what's happening physically doesn't come naturally at all.

Somatic therapy pays attention to that part of the experience too.

At Embrace Counseling Center, we offer somatic therapy and Somatic Experiencing in St. Charles and online throughout Illinois. It's not about choosing between talking and working with the body. There's room for both.

What Is Somatic Therapy?

Somatic therapy recognizes that stress, anxiety, grief, and trauma can be experienced not only through thoughts and emotions, but also through the body and nervous system.

These experiences may show up as tension, changes in breathing, restlessness, numbness, feeling on edge, or difficulty feeling present.

Somatic therapy gently brings awareness to these physical sensations alongside conversation and emotional exploration.

Your therapist may help you slow down, notice what is happening in your body, and become curious about patterns of activation or shutdown.

As Dr. Peter A. Levine, developer of Somatic Experiencing® (SE™), writes, “Trauma is a fact of life. It does not have to be a life sentence.”
By including the body in therapy, somatic work can support greater regulation, resilience, connection, and a sense of being grounded in the present.

How Somatic Therapy Can Help

You do not need to already feel deeply connected to your body to begin Somatic Experiencing® (SE™). The work gently supports you in developing awareness of sensations and nervous system responses at a pace that feels manageable.

Slow Things Down

Sometimes the nervous system responds before we have time to notice what is happening.
We may suddenly feel anxious, activated, overwhelmed, or shut down.

Somatic Experiencing® (SE™) helps slow the process down by gently noticing sensations and nervous system responses as they arise.
This awareness can help us recognize patterns of activation and settling without becoming overwhelmed.
Over time, SE™ can support a greater capacity to stay present, regulate, and respond with more choice.

Somatic Therapy Doesn’t Mean You Have to Stop Talking

This is worth saying because the word somatic can make the whole thing sound a lot more mysterious than it is.

You can still come in and talk about your week, your relationships, your family, your past, or the thing that happened yesterday.

The difference is that your therapist may also pay attention to what happens in your body while you're talking about it. For some people, that adds information that conversation alone hasn't quite reached.
