EMDR Therapy for Trauma, Anxiety & Difficult Experiences in Illinois
EMDR can sound a little strange the first time someone explains it.
You think about something difficult while moving your eyes back and forth? And that's therapy?
There's more to it than that, but the eye movement piece is part of EMDR. EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, and it's an approach that helps people work with memories and experiences that still bring up a strong reaction in the present.
At Embrace Counseling Center, we offer EMDR therapy in St. Charles and online throughout Illinois. If you're interested but still have absolutely no idea what an EMDR session would actually be like, that's completely fine. We'll explain it before we do anything.

What Is EMDR Therapy?
Sometimes something happened in the past, but your brain and body still react like part of it is happening now.
You might know logically that you're safe and still panic in a certain situation. A memory might come back with the same intensity it had years ago. Or something happening now can bring up a reaction that feels much bigger than what's actually in front of you.
EMDR is designed to help your brain process those experiences differently so they don't continue to carry the same intensity.
And despite the name, EMDR doesn't always involve eye movements. Therapists can also use other forms of alternating, or bilateral, stimulation.
How EMDR Therapy Works
There is preparation before we start working directly with difficult memories.
Start with what you want help with
You and your therapist will talk about what's bringing you to therapy, what has been bothering you, and what you'd like to feel different.
You don't need to arrive with a perfectly organized timeline of your life.
Work with the memory differently
During EMDR reprocessing, your therapist will guide you through sets of bilateral stimulation while you notice what comes up.
That might be thoughts, memories, emotions, images, or physical sensations. You don't have to narrate every detail as it happens. Your therapist will check in and guide the process as you go.
Make sure you know what to expect
Before reprocessing begins, your therapist will explain what you're doing and help you develop ways to stay grounded if something feels intense.
You can ask questions. You can slow down. You can stop.
You Don’t Have to Tell the Whole Story Out Loud
This is one of the things some people appreciate about EMDR.
Your therapist needs enough information to understand what you're working on and help you through the process, but you don't necessarily have to describe every detail of an experience for EMDR to be useful.
That can matter when something feels difficult to talk about, you've already told the story many times, or you simply don't want therapy to depend entirely on finding the right words.
We'll talk with you about what you are and aren't comfortable sharing.
