Therapy for Children & Teens in Illinois

Kids and teens don't always walk into the kitchen and say, “I've been having a hard time lately and I'd like to talk about it.”

Usually, you notice something.

Your child is having bigger reactions than usual. School has become a battle. Your teenager is spending more time alone. They're worried about things that never used to bother them, having trouble with friends, getting frustrated easily, or just don't seem quite like themselves.

Sometimes you know exactly what's going on. There was a loss, a divorce, a move, something happened at school, or your family is going through a difficult season. Other times, you're trying to piece it together too.

At Embrace Counseling Center, we provide therapy for children and adolescents in St. Charles and online throughout Illinois. We start by getting to know your child- not just the reason you brought them in.

FIND A CHILD OR TEEN THERAPIST

Child & Teen Mental Health Can Show Up in Everyday Life

What looks like anger can be anxiety. What looks like not caring about school can be a kid who's overwhelmed. A teenager who suddenly wants nothing to do with the family may be going through a completely normal developmental shift- or there may be something else going on.

That's part of why we don't want to make too many assumptions from one behavior.

We want to understand what you're seeing at home, what your child or teen is experiencing from their perspective, and what's happening around them. School, friendships, family relationships, identity, culture, stress, ADHD, grief, trauma, and major changes can all be part of that picture.

How Child & Adolescent Therapy Can Help

What therapy looks like depends a lot on who is sitting in front of us.

Give them another way to communicate

Talking isn't always the easiest way for kids to show us what's going on.

With younger children, therapy may include Child-Centered Play Therapy, Sandtray Therapy, creative activities, and other developmentally appropriate approaches. Play isn't something we add to therapy to make it more fun. For children, it can be part of how they communicate and work through things they don't have words for yet.

Make sense of what’s happening

As kids get older, therapy usually becomes more conversational. We can talk about anxiety, friendships, school, family, relationships, identity, emotions, ADHD, grief, or whatever else has been taking up space.

The goal isn't to interrogate them until they tell us what's wrong. It's to build enough of a relationship that we can actually understand what's happening together.

Include parents without taking over

Parents and caregivers matter here.

How involved you are will depend on your child's age, what they're working on, and what makes sense clinically. We'll talk with you about what confidentiality looks like, what information can be shared, and how you can support your child outside of sessions.

Your child gets a relationship with their therapist. You don't get left completely in the dark. We work to find the balance.

Therapy Should Fit the Kid in Front of Us

Two twelve-year-olds with anxiety can need completely different things.

We want to know about your child's personality, family, culture, relationships, school experience, identity, strengths, interests, and the ways they already make sense of the world.

We also know parents are often coming in with questions of their own. Is this normal? Am I making too much of this? Should I have noticed sooner? What am I supposed to do when this happens at home?

You can bring those questions too.
